North Yorkshire Citizens Advice & Law Centre (NYCALC)

During the long hot summer, NYCALC has been earnestly preparing for what will be our busiest time of year, autumn and winter. 

The shorter and chillier days place far more demand on people’s pockets and see a dramatic increase in people attending our drop-ins, outreach sessions and calling the telephone adviceline. As you will be well aware, everyday living remains expensive with food prices rising and energy bills unpredictable, sadly resulting in hardship for many. Over the last year debt has become an increasingly common problem, with an 18% increase in NYCALC’s cases. We are proud that we have been able to help people tackle this distressing issue constructively and enable £3,288,934 of debt to be written off across the county.

We Care Scheme

Supporting people with disabilities or those who may be vulnerable for any reason

North Yorkshire is one of the safest places to live in the UK. However, for some people, going into their local town or city centre can be intimidating.

The We Care scheme looks to provide a sense of safety and independence for those who may be more vulnerable and enables the police to provide them with a better level of service.

Broadband for Farlington

All of the local residents who have lived in Farlington for more than two years may remember that David carried out a survey of the Broadband speeds that were available to telephone users in our immediate area.  The results were used to reinforce our arguments for a Fibre link from Stillington (or Sherrif Hutton) to Farlington.  The situation has moved on and BT considers that it has fulfilled its commitment to provide HSBB to local rural areas but we do not appear to be receiving the, frequently promised, improved connectivity. Members of the Parish Meeting are attempting to re-energise the work and need current figures to prove that we have no better Broadband than we had 3 or 4 years ago.
