North Yorkshire Council has published its Local Nature Recovery Strategy.
North Yorkshire supports an amazing diversity of landscapes and wildlife, from ancient woodland and chalk hills to large expanses of open moorland and beautiful historic parklands. It is is also home to five protected landscapes, one of which is the Howardian Hills, right here on our doorstep.
The Local Nature Recovery Strategy considers land at a county scale and identifies locations to improve nature and provide other benefits, such as capturing carbon from the atmosphere, flood regulation and access to nature-rich spaces where this is most needed for health and wellbeing.
The Local Nature Recovery Strategy:
- sets out priorities for nature’s recovery, such as increasing woodland cover or creating wetlands
- maps the most valuable existing areas for nature
- maps specific proposals for creating and improving habitat for nature and wider environmental goals
Love Your Local Market
From 15th to 30th May, North Yorkshire Council is celebrating ‘Love Your Local Market’ fortnight. This national UK initiative celebrates and supports the vibrant world of local markets.
North Yorkshire Council is offering the chance to try out market trading free for one day. This opportunity is open to first-time traders who want to experience running a market stall at no cost, and existing market traders who would like to try trading at a different market location operated by North Yorkshire Council.
You can choose from one of our vibrant markets in Ripon, Thirsk, Northallerton, Helmsley, Pickering and Whitby.

Register for recycling centres
All North Yorkshire residents must now register to use the council’s household waste recycling centres.
From Monday 27 April 2026, you need to register to use the household waste recycling centres in North Yorkshire. All residents of North Yorkshire who pay Council Tax to North Yorkshire Council can register. The type of registration you need depends on the type of vehicle you use to visit the sites and how long you want to register for. There are also different rules for charities.
You can choose the type of registration you need when you apply.

Church Bells Restoration
St Leonard’s Church, Farlington
Work on the restoration of the bells will start on January 6th 2026 and take approximately 12 weeks.
During this time access to the church may be restricted. Church services will take place as planned.
The Churchyard will remain open but please avoid the west (back) end of the church where the works are taking place.
